The Reading Room:

Blessed are the Peacemakers is the 5th Gabriella Giovanni mystery, and I am solidly addicted to their spell. I should know better than to start a book in this series at night, but I did it anyway and the next time I looked at the clock, it was 6:30 a.m. But, what a glorious night/morning of reading it was! Well worth any sleep lost or dreams missed. Can’t imagine any dreams being better than this book. Gabriella and the danger she finds herself in make reading this series a thrill like few others. This character is smart, strong, and tenacious. She is a fierce defender of the truth and those she loves. Gabriella Giovanni is simply one of the best female characters in mystery/crime fiction.

In this latest chapter of Gabriella’s life, she is once more in the role of protecting her family and trying to survive tough personal blows. Gabriella and her husband Sean Donovan have been married seven years, with their precious daughter a seven-year-old testament to their love. Living in her step-father’s penthouse in San Francisco, with all the protection and luxury it provides gives her family a place to heal and relax after threats in the past. Gabriella has a job she loves as a crime beat reporter, and her husband has a job with the DEA. Looking forward to taking the first vacation with just the two of them since their marriage, Gabriella and Donovan must first get through a week of his absence on a DEA assignment. That vacation never comes, as Donovan’s plane goes down in the jungles of Guatemala and he is presumed dead. After two months of barely being able to get out of bed, Gabriella decides that she must visit the area where the plane was last on radar, to find his body or learn what happened to him, as the DEA has ended their inquiries. The decision to travel to these jungles is one that will place Gabriella in a dangerous environment of nature and drug cartels, but she feels that she must endure it in order to put her life back together for her daughter and herself.

Although Gabriella has had a senator’s help in planning her trip, with a guide and arrangements on the ground set in place, Guatemala is a place where plans are seldom allowed to follow their intended course. The drug cartels make the rules and have their own plans. Gabriella Giovanni and Sean Donovan are pawns in a cut-throat business where human life is only as important as it is beneficial to the cartels. Gabriella soon learns that trust is a slippery slope of disappointment and dire consequences. Her quest to find her husband is a twist of the unexpected in the most gripping tales yet in this series.

One of the many talents of author Kristi Belcamino is the ability to create suspense, the kind of on-the-edge-of-your-seat excitement that keeps a reader racing along with the characters to escape danger and death. However,Belcamino also has a deft touch at the slower moments of suspense, where waiting behind a door in a breathless panic raises the reader’s pulse along with the character waiting. This story and all the other Gabriella Giovanni stories, are participatory reading at its finest. All bets are off in the struggle to survive, and the moment-to-moment peril is palatable.

Dru Ann’s Musings:

Blessed are the Peacemakers by Kristi Belcamino is the fifth book in the “Gabriella Giovanni” mystery series. August 2017

Gabriella Giovanni has it all. A stunning penthouse in San Francisco. An exciting job on the crime beat. A doting and movie-star handsome husband and a beautiful little girl. So, when she complains about all the travel her husband’s new DEA job requires, she know she has good problems.

But when her husband’s plane goes down in the jungles of Mexico and she is told he is dead, Gabriella thinks things could not possibly get any worse.

She is wrong.

Despite the U.S. government’s attempt to find the wreckage, they come up empty-handed. Gabriella heads to Mexico to trace Donovan’s path to find some answers, and hopefully, some healing.

In the deepest jungles of Mexico, it doesn’t take long for Gabriella to realize she’s in over her head and is putting what remains of the life, including her precious daughter, and her ill mother, at risk.

The fifth book in the acclaimed and Anthony, Barry and Macavity-nominated Gabriella Giovanni Mystery series.

All I can say is WOW! This grippingly enticing read kept me glued to the pages, even venturing into another borough because I just could not stop reading the visually descriptive narrative that had me on the sideline watching in as the events of the moment played out with the characters. The complexity of the various scenes was staged perfectly as both Donovan and Gabriella struggle to stay alive, not knowing the whereabouts of one another. The determination and the pivotal role that they must make to accomplish their goal is so agonizingly fraught, that my heart broke for them, even though Donovan pissed me off. Riveting emotions exude throughout this fast-paced drama that left me wanting more and I applaud the author for delivering a well-executed story that catered to what I love in a suspenseful novel. This is one of the best book in this terrific series and I can’t wait to see where we go next with Gabriella, Donovan and the rest of the gang.

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, the 5th Gabriella Giovanni novel by Kristi Belcamino is, in my opinion, her best work so far. Just when a reader of this series thinks they have been challenged in every way possible, Ms. Belcamino takes you further still. She reaches out and drops you into the depths of depravity. Then, she adroitly balances the action with a fierce game of emotional cat and mouse. The twists and turns come at you from unexpected angles. The characters represent every side of our basic existence, some may not be who they seem and at least one will make your skin crawl, (perhaps literally)! Upon reflection, one element in this story took on symbolic meaning to me and I found it quite unexpected. The aftermath of this experience, and what the future holds for Gabriella, Sean and their family are definitely worth waiting to see. I, for one, will be waiting.
This Gabriella Giovanni book, 5th in the series, is absolutely fast paced and full of action, maybe the best one yet! The suspense is real, the setting is phenomenal, and reading this book is almost like watching a movie. It is so action-packed you will not want to set it down. There are moments of gut-wrenching fear, moments of heart-rending sadness, and yes, moments of impatience, as we follow the non-stop story of Gabriella dealing with impossible circumstances and horrific struggles. I have read all of the books in this series and have never been disappointed. I eagerly await each new book that Kristi Belcamino publishes, because I know I will be in for a real treat. She is an excellent writer, and each new offering is better than the previous one. I am so glad I have been fortunate enough to follow her writing career and have had theopportunityy to sometimes read advance copies, as was the case with ‘Peacemakers’. I highly recommend this book and all her books!
Another stellar mystery from Belcamino! Every page is an adventure, but beyond that it is a story about marriage, parenting, and healing from trauma. Gabriella is the heroine we’ve longed for: strong and adventurous but REAL. She is your sister and your best girlfriend, and you’ll want to share a cappuccino with her as she regales you with tales of her Guatemalan adventure. Once you pick Peacemakers up you won’t want to put it down.
In Peacemaker we see a darker and desperate side to Gabriella and I absolutely loved it. An interesting journey through unfamiliar territory pushes Gabriella and tests her strength and love for her husband and family. An incredible love story wrapped in a suspenseful mystery. I can’t wait to read more with this heroine.
this book has the twists and turns to keep you reading. there is no way you can predict the ending accurately. the characters emotions are real, and/or important, to me they seem plausible in real life. As he says at the the end “I am here” for the next book in the series.
This novel is everything and more that I would expect from a Kristi Belcamino novel. I feel this was a transition and change of pace novel for this series. The setting of the novel for (for the majority of the time) is Guatemala Jungle instead of SF Bay Area. Kristi showed a well researched novel in her portrayal of the cartel (fans of Don Winslow would relate to this). Peacemakers does not let up from the moment the novel enfolds. Cleverly, Kristi challenges the reader to discover who are the heroes and villains. My favorite part of the novel is when family gathers in Livermore for Sunday dinner with Nana. Two characters Kristi expertly developed were Saint and El Loro. I highly recommend this novel and anxiously await the continuation of this suspenseful series where Family plays an even more important role than Fast and Furious.
Gabriella Giovanni is a character you love to follow. Sometimes, the risks she takes seem foolhardy, but as a fictional character, the risks are worth taking and guaranteed excitement. Kristi Belcamino writes consistently fast, furious page-turning action. At the same time, she gives Gabriella a thoroughly authentic family and home life, albeit, one with enough secrets and circumstances to ensure a long running series. I look forward to everything Kristi Belcamino writes and I suggest, if you haven’t read this series from the beginning, start now.
